Flavia's
Place Bed and Breakfast History...
Flavia's
Place B&B is named for the lady who lived in the home more than fifty
years. She was a well liked resident of the city of Mitchell. An upstairs
alcove is dedicated to her life.
Flavia's Place B&B
is an Italian Bracket style house that was built in 1880. The house has
survived many changes and a major fire. It has been completely renovated
since 1996 when I purchased the house at auction. The two upstairs apartments
became four large bedrooms, one with its own bath while the other three
share a bath. Each of the bedrooms is decorated according to a season of
the year. See the Bed and Breakfast Rooms and Rates.
Lelia Guilbert, Innkeeper After
33 years living in fast paced California, Lelia returned to South Dakota
where she set up her renovated home as a Bed and Breakfast. She is a lady
of many talents: as an artist she works in a basement studio where she
produces fabric and clothing. Lelia is a square dance caller and instructor.
The 1000 square foot garage she added in 1999 serves as a square dance
hall and art classroom. Lelia has done much of the outdoor landscaping
and was recently honored by the City of Mitchell with a home beautification
award. All parts of the house reflect Lelia’s eclectic taste, either
from things she has collected or things she has made. All of the window
treatments and bed coverings were hand made by Lelia. Her Christmas books
and nativity collection are displayed year around in an upstairs library.
The upstairs hallway bathroom features Christmas tree paintings by an
artist who bartered for silk clothing. Lelia loves to cook and she designs
a breakfast to suit the individual tastes and needs of her guests. A well
traveled hostess who loves people, many of her guests enjoy sharing experiences
in a relaxed atmosphere after their appetites have been satisfied.
